Tsuba

Sword guard used on Shinai, Bokuto and Iaito. Made of leather or plastic for Shinai and Bokuto, and metal for Iaito. The Tsuba has notches which allow the sword hilt to be steadied with the edge of the thumb before drawing, which also prevents an Iaito from slipping from its Saya (scabbard).
