Iaito
Practice sword used in Iaido. Approximating the weight and
feel of a real Katana, an Iaito sometimes has a blunt cutting edge and is
used only to practice drawing and cutting techniques.
It is not forged in the manner of a real sword, and would break
or bend if used in combat.
Although much less expensive than a real sword, it may cost from
£200 to £600 for a genuine and well crafted Iaito.
The picture shows an Iaito in its Saya (scabbard). The Sageo
(cords) on the Saya and the Tsuba (guard) and Tsuka (hilt/handle)
can be seen. The grip is woven cotton or silk thread over
sharkskin.
