Hakama

Skirt like trousers traditionally worn by the Samurai and modern Kendoka. 4 straps (himo) are used to tie them around the waist as follows: The longest pair which are attached to the front waistband of the hakama, are crossed over at the small of the back, then brought around the front and again crossed over then tied in a bow in the small of the back. The two shorter himo which are attached to the rear back support (koshi Ite) are brought round the front and tied in a firm knot, or sometimes a bow for Iai. The loose ends are tucked through the tied himo at the sides.

They are usually made from cotton of varying quality and thickness but sometimes polyester (preferred for Iai) and vary in price from around £25 to £180. Colours are Indigo Blue (traditional), White and Black. Some hakama designed for Iai are patterned.

Hakama disguise the movement of the feet, which helps prevent your opponent from anticipating your intentions, and are designed for free movement.
